Gradam Award recently for use of Gaeilge as a bi-lingual language
The Ardilaun Hotel, member and home of the BNI Tribes Chapter, was announced winner of Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh at a special awards ceremony which took place on Thursday the 10th of April 2014. The Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Padraig Conneely, presented John Ryan owner of The Ardilaun with Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh, winner of the ‘Tourism & Hospitality’ category, sponsored by Fáilte Ireland. – a beautiful piece of sculpture especially designed by the famous artist Pádraic Reaney symbolising the 14 Tribes of Galway. The awards ceremony attracted over 100 representatives from all aspects of Galway life who came to celebrate the use of Irish in business in the city and with four categories up for grabs, there was plenty to celebrate on the night!
They all received a business package to the value of €2,000 from their respective category sponsors as well as a replica of Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh designed especially for the Gradam by Pádraic Reaney, and sponsored by Údarás na Gaeltachta.
This year, the standard of entries to the Gradam was particularly high given the commitment by all of the Gearrliosta to include the language in so many aspects of the businesses and organisations.
The Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr. Pádraig Conneely congratulated all of those on the Gearrliosta and spoke about how their use of the Irish language could impact positively on Galway’s application for the prestigious title European Capital of Culture 2020: “The work that Gaillimh le Gaeilge do, and indeed all of the businesses and organisations here today, will undoubtedly help our application and help make Galway a truly unique cultural city that Europe could be proud of.”
Speaking about the Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh award the Minister of State in the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Dinny McGinley, T.D. said:
“This award strengthens the link between the Irish language and business which is very important to Galway city, considering its proximity to a large Gaeltacht area and the substantial number of young people being educated there through Irish. This work is closely aligned with the aims of the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010-2030 and with the implementation of the language planning process under the Gaeltacht Act 2012. Considering the amount of work being undertaken in Galway to promote the language, Galway could be among the Gaeltacht Service Towns to be statutorily recognised under the Act, subject to a language plan being prepared and approved. I would like to encourage the various key stakeholders to come together to achieve that statutory recognition.”
Cathaoirleach Ghaillimh le Gaeilge, Iggy Ó Muircheartaigh congratulated all of the winners and commended their bilingual work. He said that it was important for Galway not to lose its reputation as a ‘Cathair Ghaelach’ and that the Irish language should always remain central to Galway’s long-term cultural image.
President of the Galway Chamber, Jim Fennell also spoke at the event and said:
“Irish and its importance to Galway City can no longer be underestimated…Galway Chamber believes that Galway’s status as a bilingual city will give us a competitive advantage and secure one of the city’s most unique selling point – the Irish language.”
Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh spoke on behalf of the moltóirí and said that they were particularly impressed by the ‘Seirbhís i nGaeilge’ that Tesco developed as well as the work that is being done behind the scenes to promote the language among the 200 staff with the introduction of Irish language classes in the store. He also congratulated them on the dual language signage and the fact that the Irish language was given first preference to the English language on aisle signage.
Ba mhaith le Gaillimh le Gaeilge buíochas a ghabháil leis na hainmnithe ar fad a ghlac páirt i nGradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh i mbliana agus comhghairdeas a dhéanamh leis Tesco Gaillimh! Ár mbuíochas do na moltóirí, An tOllamh Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, Déan Scoil Ghnó-Coláiste na hOllscoile Bhaile Átha Cliath, Siubhán Nic Grianna, Údarás na Gaeltachta agus Ailish Rohan, Galway City Council as ucht a gcuid ama don mholtóireacht. Buíochas speisialta chomh maith leis na hurraí ar fad a lean lena dtacaíocht don Ghradam thar na mblianta. Táimid fíor-bhuíoch dóibh.

A brand new cycling event was launched recently at The Ardilaun Hotel, Galway. The “Cradle Six-Day Cycling Tour of Ireland” will be a spectacular cycling trip around Ireland. Starting out at The Ardilaun Hotel Galway on Monday June 11th and riding through Longford, Dublin, Kilkenny, Cork and Limerick before finishing back in Galway at The Ardilaun Hotel on Saturday 16th .
Event coordinator, Niall Kennedy said, this epic tour of Ireland is a culmination of nine years of experience in organising cycling events for charity. Last year’s Cork to Galway cycle was over-subscribed and we had to turn people away. The six-day tour will be run as three separate events running consecutively and cyclists can choose to do two, four or all six days. So there is something here for all levels of cyclist. It is not a race or endurance test. We put as much emphasis on the social side of the event as we do on the cycling.
One thing cyclists can be assured of, that is they can expect the same quality of services and facilities both on and off-road that they have come to expect from our events. The event will be raising funds for two charities. “Cradle” and “Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association” (IMNDA). Cradle is a Dublin based charity ( www.cradle.ie ) that reaches out to children in war-torn regions and areas of natural disaster. They are currently active in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Kosovo, Moldova, Thailand and Cambodia.
The funds raised from the cycle will fund their building projects in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Thailand and Cambodia. The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association ( www.imnda.ie ) is the primary support organisation in Ireland providing care for people with MND, their families, friends and carers. The cornerstone of its approach is to put people with MND at the heart of all of its focus, to champion their voice and dignity, to provide information resources and support so as to empower them to make informed decisions for themselves as individuals, whilst also providing every possible support to their families and carers.
Irish Cycling legend Sean Kelly will be participating in the event which is always a great attraction for our cyclists.
There is a minimum sponsorship amount to be raised by each participant depending on how many days you choose to do. All food, accommodation and on-road services will be provided. All proceeds raised by cyclists will go directly to the charities as all the organizing and support team work is done on a voluntary basis.
To find out all about the event and register to participate visit www.cradlecycle.com You can also follow us on www.facebook.com/cradlecycle. This event promises to be the best cycling event of its kind in the country this year. Places are limited so register early to avoid disappointment.
