  • The Ardilaun Hotel Galway scoops the Tourism & Hospitality

Gradam Award recently for use of Gaeilge as a bi-lingual language

The Ardilaun Hotel, member and home of the BNI Tribes Chapter, was announced winner of Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh at a special awards ceremony which took place on Thursday the 10th of April 2014. The Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Padraig Conneely, presented John Ryan owner of The Ardilaun with Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh, winner of the ‘Tourism & Hospitality’ category, sponsored by Fáilte Ireland. – a beautiful piece of sculpture especially designed by the famous artist Pádraic Reaney symbolising the 14 Tribes of Galway. The awards ceremony attracted over 100 representatives from all aspects of Galway life who came to celebrate the use of Irish in business in the city and with four categories up for grabs, there was plenty to celebrate on the night!
They all received a business package to the value of €2,000 from their respective category sponsors as well as a replica of Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh designed especially for the Gradam by Pádraic Reaney, and sponsored by Údarás na Gaeltachta.

This year, the standard of entries to the Gradam was particularly high given the commitment by all of the Gearrliosta to include the language in so many aspects of the businesses and organisations.

The Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr. Pádraig Conneely congratulated all of those on the Gearrliosta and spoke about how their use of the Irish language could impact positively on Galway’s application for the prestigious title European Capital of Culture 2020: “The work that Gaillimh le Gaeilge do, and indeed all of the businesses and organisations here today, will undoubtedly help our application and help make Galway a truly unique cultural city that Europe could be proud of.”

Speaking about the Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh award the Minister of State in the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Dinny McGinley, T.D. said:

“This award strengthens the link between the Irish language and business which is very important to Galway city, considering its proximity to a large Gaeltacht area and the substantial number of young people being educated there through Irish. This work is closely aligned with the aims of the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010-2030 and with the implementation of the language planning process under the Gaeltacht Act 2012. Considering the amount of work being undertaken in Galway to promote the language, Galway could be among the Gaeltacht Service Towns to be statutorily recognised under the Act, subject to a language plan being prepared and approved. I would like to encourage the various key stakeholders to come together to achieve that statutory recognition.”

Cathaoirleach Ghaillimh le Gaeilge, Iggy Ó Muircheartaigh congratulated all of the winners and commended their bilingual work. He said that it was important for Galway not to lose its reputation as a ‘Cathair Ghaelach’ and that the Irish language should always remain central to Galway’s long-term cultural image.
President of the Galway Chamber, Jim Fennell also spoke at the event and said:
“Irish and its importance to Galway City can no longer be underestimated…Galway Chamber believes that Galway’s status as a bilingual city will give us a competitive advantage and secure one of the city’s most unique selling point – the Irish language.”

Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh spoke on behalf of the moltóirí and said that they were particularly impressed by the ‘Seirbhís i nGaeilge’ that Tesco developed as well as the work that is being done behind the scenes to promote the language among the 200 staff with the introduction of Irish language classes in the store. He also congratulated them on the dual language signage and the fact that the Irish language was given first preference to the English language on aisle signage.

Ba mhaith le Gaillimh le Gaeilge buíochas a ghabháil leis na hainmnithe ar fad a ghlac páirt i nGradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh i mbliana agus comhghairdeas a dhéanamh leis Tesco Gaillimh! Ár mbuíochas do na moltóirí, An tOllamh Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, Déan Scoil Ghnó-Coláiste na hOllscoile Bhaile Átha Cliath, Siubhán Nic Grianna, Údarás na Gaeltachta agus Ailish Rohan, Galway City Council as ucht a gcuid ama don mholtóireacht. Buíochas speisialta chomh maith leis na hurraí ar fad a lean lena dtacaíocht don Ghradam thar na mblianta. Táimid fíor-bhuíoch dóibh.

One of the highlights of the racing festival will be the Ardilaun Hotel Listed Oyster Stakes, which takes place on the first day of the races, Monday 10th September, which is now in its twenty first year. Celebrating fifty years in business this year, the Ryan family of The Ardilaun Hotel first became associated with this prestigious race in 1991 and have continued their support over the years.
Since 1991 when this race was first introduced, well-known and highly acclaimed trainers, jockeys and owners have chosen to enter this race, one of only two listed races in the Galway Racing calendar. As far back as 1969 Paddy Ryan, who sadly passed away in the last few years, was a member of the Race committee when the decision was made to add the Autumn meeting to the racing calendar, creating an extra attraction in an effort to prolong the Galway tourist season; drawing visitors and tourists to the region from all over Ireland and abroad.

‘The Galway race course is a superb asset to theGalway region, attracting visitors to stay and enjoy the area and providing a great source of revenue to all sectors.Galway has benefited greatly over the years and the Ardilaun are pleased to be associated with it,’ said John Ryan, Managing Director of the Ardilaun Hotel,’ We are certainly looking forward to another great day’s racing.’

The Ardilaun Hotel Listed Oyster Stakes is a flat race open to colts, geldings and fillies who are three years old or more. Over the years the cream of the stables, trainers and owners have participated in this race with regular entries from leading trainers John Oxx who won last year, Dermot Weld, Aidan O’Brien, Kevin Prendergast, Jim Bolger and Mark Johnston.

Over the years The Ardilaun Hotel Listed Oyster Stakes has drawn entries from internationally renowned owners such as Aga Khan, Godolphin Enterprise, Moyglare Stud, John Magnier and Lady Clague.

This meeting is also very popular with people involved in the tourist industry who may not have been available to attend during the Summer. Special offers are now available visit Facebook.

  • Cradle Cycling Tour of Ireland 11th to 16th June 2012

A brand new cycling event was launched recently at The Ardilaun Hotel, Galway. The “Cradle Six-Day Cycling Tour of Ireland” will be a spectacular cycling trip around Ireland. Starting out at The Ardilaun Hotel Galway on Monday June 11th and riding through Longford, Dublin, Kilkenny, Cork and Limerick before finishing back in Galway at The Ardilaun Hotel on Saturday 16th .

Event coordinator, Niall Kennedy said, this epic tour of Ireland is a culmination of nine years of experience in organising cycling events for charity. Last year’s Cork to Galway cycle was over-subscribed and we had to turn people away. The six-day tour will be run as three separate events running consecutively and cyclists can choose to do two, four or all six days. So there is something here for all levels of cyclist. It is not a race or endurance test. We put as much emphasis on the social side of the event as we do on the cycling.

One thing cyclists can be assured of, that is they can expect the same quality of services and facilities both on and off-road that they have come to expect from our events. The event will be raising funds for two charities. “Cradle” and “Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association” (IMNDA). Cradle is a Dublin based charity ( www.cradle.ie ) that reaches out to children in war-torn regions and areas of natural disaster. They are currently active in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Kosovo, Moldova, Thailand and Cambodia.

The funds raised from the cycle will fund their building projects in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Thailand and Cambodia. The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association ( www.imnda.ie ) is the primary support organisation in Ireland providing care for people with MND, their families, friends and carers. The cornerstone of its approach is to put people with MND at the heart of all of its focus, to champion their voice and dignity, to provide information resources and support so as to empower them to make informed decisions for themselves as individuals, whilst also providing every possible support to their families and carers.

Irish Cycling legend Sean Kelly will be participating in the event which is always a great attraction for our cyclists.

There is a minimum sponsorship amount to be raised by each participant depending on how many days you choose to do. All food, accommodation and on-road services will be provided. All proceeds raised by cyclists will go directly to the charities as all the organizing and support team work is done on a voluntary basis.

To find out all about the event and register to participate visit www.cradlecycle.com You can also follow us on www.facebook.com/cradlecycle. This event promises to be the best cycling event of its kind in the country this year. Places are limited so register early to avoid disappointment.

  • BPW SUMMER LUNCH a great success in aid of Galway Hospice

BPW Galway hosted their Annual Summer Lunch last Friday 18th May in the Ardilaun Hotel and this year BPW were delighted to have Gemma Hussey as our guest speaker with the proceeds of the raffle on the day going to Galway Hospice – it was a great success. Over 150 ladies turned out for this very glamorous event and enjoyed an afternoon, of food, fashion and fun.

Gemma Hussey, at the age of 22, co-founded and directed The English Language Institute in Dublin, having left UCD with a degree in Politics and Economics. She became a leader of the Women’s Political Association, having married and had three children. She was elected as an Independent to Seanad Eireann, then to Dail Eireann for Fine Gael, becoming Minister for Education under Garret FitzGerald. She left politics (undefeated) and worked voluntarily in eastern Europe, designing and delivering democracy training to women in ten countries of the region. To date she has written two books and currently chairs the Ireland Romania Cultural Foundation. More recently she writes and broadcasts on current affairs and in 2010 was a founder member of the 5050 Group, and are a supporter and advisor to women for election.

Galway Hospice are a worthy charity this year providing a wide range of Specialist Palliative Care Services, which include Home Care, Inpatient Care, Day Care, Bereavement Support and Education. Their Home Care service, which has been in operation since 1990, made 5813 “Hospice at Home” visits last year throughout county Galway, including the Aran Islands and Inishbofin. Their specialist nurses work in close collaboration with the General Practitioners to support patients and families in their home environment for as long as possible. The Day Care service, which had 1036 attendances last year, provides a blend of clinical, therapeutic and recreational supports for patients, serving as a link between inpatient and community-based services.

Both the Home Care and Day Care service cost €1.5 million to run annually and are funded entirely by voluntary contributions. The Galway Hospice depends totally on this voluntary support to ensure that we can continue providing these services. In 2011 their fundraising income fell by 10%.

The Hospice also works in partnership with the Western Area HSE who initially provided 100 % funding for their 12-bed In Patient Unit which costs €3.5 million to run annually. However funding has fallen by 10.3% over the last 3 years which puts extra pressure on funds raised. This enables patients to avail of the care and expertise of the specialist multi-disciplinary team within the Inpatient Unit at Galway Hospice.

All Hospice services are provided free of charge. Your contribution will assist the Hospice in providing the highest possible level of care to patients and families at what for them is a very difficult time.

The folks from Let’s Do It Global were also in attendance on the countdown to the Volvo Ocean Race so there was a definite nautical theme on the day.

During the meal wonderful hats and headpieces from local Milliner Catherina King were showcased giving you plenty of inspiration for the upcoming Galway Races.

Top raffle prizes won on the day included a specially commissioned oil painting by Thelma Mansfield valued at €700, plus a round of golf for 4 people at the exclusive K Club to mention but a few! An event like this could not happen without some main sponsors and were grateful this year to have KPMG and Collins Mc Nicholas
