ATLANTAQUARIUM

Atlantaquarium is Ireland’s National Aquarium and home to the country’s largest display of marine and fresh water life. The aquarium is located on the Seafront Promenade of Salthill, overlooking Galway Bay.

Talks are held throughout the day during summer on a variety of topics including Fin Whale, Touch Pool, Fresh water Fish Feeding etc. Staff are on hand at all times to answer questions and show you around if you wish- free of charge!!!

The largest tank is the ocean tank, 4 metres deep and containing over 120 tonnes of sea water! It is home to some of the largest, predatory fish including Cod, Pollack, Wrasse and small Sharks. It is situated on the ground floor, but can also be viewed from above. At any one time there can be over 200 animals in this tank, with a combined mass of a quarter of a tonne.

It takes 7 kilos of squid, herring and crab a day to keep all the animals in the Ocean Tank fed: that’s over 2 tonnes of raw food a year.

Other exhibits include Ray pool, Splash Pool, Touch Pool, Harbour, Lighthouse, Estuary, Harbour, Weir, Wreck and others.

Atlantaquarium is open 7 days a week for the Spring and Summer. It closes on some Mondays and Tuesdays from October to February for essential tank maintenance.  Opening hours are Monday To Friday from 9AM to 5PM and Saturday and Sunday from 9AM to 6PM
